California typically loves to warm up sooner, so it’s time to start preparing for that heat. If you don’t stay out of the heat, you can end up suffering from heat stroke or passing out. Knowing your body’s limits is important when it comes to heat. Plus, limiting your sun exposure can help lessen your chances of getting skin cancers.

Wearing lighter clothes can help reduce the heat you take in. Darker clothes absorb sunlight as heat and can make you feel hotter. Lighter clothes reflect the sunshine. Wearing clothes that are breathable and made of lighter material will allow for more air movement which will make you cooler.

Staying hydrated in the heat is essential. Our bodies need water to function well on a normal day. When we drink sodas, alcohol, or coffee, we can actually dehydrate ourselves. If you plan on exercising in the sun, plan on drinking more water to stay hydrated. The more you sweat, the more water you need to be drinking.

If you don’t plan on drinking more water or dressing for the heat, plan on staying indoors. Sometimes the only way to beat the heat is to avoid it completely. Grab the family and go to the movie theaters together. Check out the museums scattered throughout California and gain some new perspective on culture. Avoiding the harmful rays can save you from dehydrating altogether.

There’s no reason to dread the heat this year. If you know how to deal with the heat, you won’t have to worry about overheating. Being smart about your clothing choices, and aware of your body will go a long way. It’s time for you to be aware of the heat, and enjoy the sunshine smartly.
