New Driving Laws in California – 2017 Edition

call-palmdale-bailbonds

There are a couple of new driving laws you are going to want to know about if you are a Californian. They involve cell phone use and are very closely related to the existing laws.

The old laws had a loophole where drivers would hold their cell phone in their hand while driving because they were using their GPS. The old law never stated the phone had to be mounted to the vehicle. The new laws that are now in effect require the phone to be mounted in certain locations, the lower right corner, or the lower left corner, of the windshield or onto the center console. A cell phone may not be attached to the middle of the windshield because it is obstructing clear view. In addition, drivers may use one finger to conduct a single swipe or tap on the screen.

Another new driving-related law more c...

Crimes, Defined

call-palmdale-bailbonds

The criminal justice system categorizes crimes into one of three groups: infractions, misdemeanors, and felonies. Each category involves a different set of justice system procedures and possible consequences for the accused. If you are worried that the law might eventually catch up to you or a loved one, you can prepare yourself by learning the different categories of crimes.

Infractions – The least serious crimes.

  • No jail time as a consequence, only fines and/ or community service.
  • Not considered a “criminal” charge and will not appear on criminal record. However, they do appear on driving and court records.
  • Crimes are non-serious, such as speeding tickets, running a red light, and trespassing.
  • The accused does not have the right to a trial by jury; a judge alone will determine t...

call-palmdale-bailbonds

$45,000. That is the low end of the average cost of what a first time DUI can cost you in California. Knowing this, wouldn’t you rather pay $20 for a Lyft or Uber home from the bar? Let’s break that figure down.

  • Insurance – This is the highest DUI related cost. Insurance will go up year after year after a DUI.
  • Towing and Storage – Your car is impounded and to get it back, it is going to cost over $500.
  • DUI classes – This will cost around the same as the towing and storage.
  • Fines and Attorney Fees – You will be going to court for that DUI, so you will want a good lawyer to help protect, and fight for, you. This can go up a few thousand dollars.
  • Driver’s License – After a DUI, your license is revoked. It costs about $100 to get it back, once you are allowed to get it back...

Where Are Our Sanctuary Cities?

call-palmdale-bailbonds

Though there is no formal legal definition of a “sanctuary city,” the United States is made up of about 300 cities, towns, and counties that call themselves one. These sanctuary cities call themselves so because they have vowed to protect undocumented immigrants from deportation. They do this by not questioning a person’s immigration status, by helping them get their children into schools, getting them healthcare, and more.

Sanctuary cities include: Chicago, New York, New Orleans, Berkeley, and Seattle. San Francisco is a particularly unique sanctuary city because it has an ordinance that prohibits it from using funds or resources to assist the federal immigration authorities unless explicitly required by a federal, state, or court order...

Let’s Talk About Sanctuary Cities

call-palmdale-bailbonds

The Trump Presidency has brought fear to undocumented immigrants now more than ever. With such debate, many cities in the U.S. have vowed to protect its immigrants, and these cities have declared themselves “sanctuary cities.”

Sanctuary cities include: San Francisco, Chicago, Seattle, and New York. An unofficial count identifies approximately 300 U.S. cities, towns, and counties as sanctuary cities. To protect undocumented immigrants from deportation, they limit cooperation with federal immigration authorities. For example, the authorities may not be allowed to ask a person about their immigration status. These cities will also help undocumented immigrants get education and healthcare.

As much as cities will do what they can to protect undocumented immigrants, there can still be tr...
